COMMUNITY CONTRIUTIONS

WAVE Youth Action Team

Led by Nadia Pasquini, recipient for the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence, a group of men in the Grade 11 Leadership and Peer Support Program at Chaminade College School spread awareness on the effects of sexting. We created a workshop entitles"(SE)cret Te(XT)s" and promoted greater awareness around the ramifications of teen sexting. The workshop touches upon the following topics: costs of sexting, legal and social implications of sexting, prevention of sexting, strategies to deal with sexting, and strategies when pictures are exposed. Through this, we became the recipients of Louise Russo’s Working Against Violence Everyday 2017 Team Excellence Award, as well as TCDSB 2016 Exemplary Practice Award and the TCDSB 2016 Team Achievement Award.

Camp Manitou

Camp Manitou is the three day grade 9 orientation for the new students that have enrolled to Chaminade College. The goal of this trip is to get the grade 9 students to open up and be comfortable with their peers. It serves as a transition from elementary school to secondary school.

In grade 11, I was selected to be a cabin leader to lead a small group of grade 9 students around, and to get them comfortable with the "brotherhood" our school is known for.

In grade 12, I was hand-picked to be a member of the Core Team. This team organizes and runs the whole orientation. Our responsibilities range from: organizing around 200 students into their cabins, organizing 64 leaders in each of those cabins, running multiple stations (ie. Theatre games), hosting a lip sync competition, and many more.

Jake's House Christmas Party

Jake's House Christmas Party

Jake's House Charity for Autistic Children supports young children with autism by hosting a Christmas party every year. At this Christmas party, children with autism are given gifts at no cost.

For my grade 10 and 11 year, I volunteered at this Christmas party. The responsibilities range from: leading the children to Santa, setting up Christmas decorations at the banquet hall, serving food, and many more.

Pasta Bingo Night

Pasta Bingo Night is an event hosted by the grade 11 leadership program that supports Jake's House Charity.

It is a night where people pay admission to play bingo for prizes, eat pasta, and socialize. Responsibilities include: making donation letters, promoting the event, organizing the event, and many more.

Peer Tutoring

At Chaminade College, students in the leadership program take the role of being a tutor to grade 9 students. When a grade 9 student is seen struggling in one of their subjects, they are advised to join a peer-tutoring program that happens over lunch.

That's where the peer tutors come in. Students who have strengths in particular subjects teach up to a group of students or a singular student who is struggling in said-subject. Through this program, grade 9 students are benefiting educationally as well as benefiting socially.

CSLIT Social Affairs Committee

The Catholic Student Leadership Impact Team has a Social Affairs committee that plans and hosts events in support of the Angel Foundation for Learning.

Led by Susan Peters, now attending University of Ottawa, the Social Affairs committee has organized a multitude of events. Some of the events that were hosted are: Christmas Movie Night, Christmas Social Gathering, Once Upon a Gala, End of Year Social BBQ, and many more. All the proceeds of these events are sent to the Angel Foundation for Learning.

The Social Affairs committee is the pinnacle of student leadership. Members of this committee show tremendous amounts of commitment, as meetings are held at the Catholic Education Centre almost weekly. This means that some members have to commute for around an hour, and stay at the CEC for around 2 hours. Also, a lot of planning takes place as permits need to be made, food needs to be catered, and a whole array of other responsibilities.

Grade 8 Summer Transitional Program

This program served as a reach-ahead orientation for grade 8 students that wanted to get comfortable with the high school environment over the summer.

At this program, I worked as a teacher's assistant under Ms. Pisani. Ms. Pisani taught physical education and health at this program, so my responsibilities were to demonstrate workout positions, set up exercise courses, facilitate the students, and many more.
